IRC

This quick tutorial will teach you how to get into the #watersports channel on the Webnet IRC, to talk with others about watersports.

First, you have to get a IRC Client.  It's a program that allows you to connect on a IRC server and talk with others on different channels.  This kind of program is generally free.  The best one, and the most popular, is named mIRC.  You can get it free at http://www.mirc.co.uk/get.html.  At this download page, you will have to choose between 16-bit and 32-bit versions; download the 16-bit version if you have Windows 3.11 and download the 32-bit one if you have Windows 95, or later.

If you don't know exactly how to download, how to install, how to use it, etc, read the Instructions for Net Newbies and Download Dummies.

Assuming you now have the mIRC program installed on your computer, here are the basics. First, you have to connect to a IRC Server. The #watersports channel is on Webnet and is managed by Ms. Tempting.  So in the "mIRC Setup" box, when you start mIRC, in the field at the top, choose either "Random US (or EU) Webnet Server" or something with "Webnet" in the front of it.

In the mIRC Setup box, you have also to fill all the fields needed, like real name (can be fake), e-mail (can be fake too) and the most important, nickname.  Everyone on the IRC will recognize you with your nickname so choose it carefully.  When you have filled all these fields, click on OK.  If the IRC server isn't working, just go to File/Setup to get in the mIRC Setup box again and choose another Webnet Server.  When you're in, you must join a channel to talk with others.  There are thousands of IRC channels on Webnet.

If you want to get wet, the only watersports channel on Webnet is #watersports.  To join a channel you can type /JOIN #channel_name, for example, /JOIN #watersports to join the watersports channel (don't forget the "/" at the beginning).

When you are on a channel, the list at the right of the window is the Nicknames list, that lists all the people who are on this channel.  If you just want to talk on the channel, type something and every people on channel will see it.  If you want to talk with someone in private, you can double-click on his nick in the nicknames list to popup a new window.

Here are some commands:

  • /MSG <nickname> <message> : send a message to someone
  • /JOIN <channel> : join a new channel (example: #Sex)
  • /UWHO <nickname> : display informations about <nickname>
  • /NICK <new_nickname> : changes your nickname to another
  • /DCC CHAT <nickname> : chat <nickname> in a special mode (faster).
  • /PING <nickname> : display lagging information about <nickname>
  • /ME <bla bla> : displays your nickname and the "bla bla" text behind it in another color. For instance /me wet his pants, will turn into Ger wet his pants if your nickname is Ger.
